Help To Helpless

Shree OM SAI Charitable Health & Educational Trust is committed to helping the helpless, homeless, sick, elderly, mentally ill and destitute in Madurai, India by providing healthy food, care, and opportunity to rehabilitate in order to restore human dignity.

Mentally Challenged : This is the largest group of beneficiaries and consists of both men and women. Though age is often difficult to determine it generally falls between 30 and 70 years. Common characteristics include:

  • Unaware of the surroundings
  • Wander within specified locations
  • Cannot comprehend
  • Normally do not interact
  • Usually passive
  • Come from different parts of India

When a family is not able to care for an individual with mental disabilities they abandon them in busy public places like markets, bus stations or railway stations. In some cases a mentally challenged person will stray away from home and get onto a train with no idea as to where it is going. They will usually be removed from the train only to find their way to another train and another unfamiliar place. Such aimless wandering will take many of these helpless people far from their home and any possible family support they may have had.
